How to Make Homemade Fabric Softener

I have quite a few things in my life that make me absurdly giddy. On that list is air drying my laundry and having a good skin day.

I have been blessed with a beautiful yard with a great big laundry line but I have also been not-so-blessed with extremely sensitive skin. If a gust of wind blows on my cheek the wrong way, you can be sure that my skin will red, swollen and covered in unpleasant bumps the very next day.

We have been using a laundry detergent for sensitive skin for years and I love it but it is unscented and with my skin struggles, fabric softener is off limits. When clothes air dry they tend to become stiff and scratchy when you aren’t using fabric softeners. All of this is a problem.

Thankfully I learned how to easily make my own hypoallergenic scented fabric softener and I bet you could make your own too!

Vinegar as Fabric Softener

White vinegar makes an excellent fabric softener. Vinegar is mildly acidic so it helps breakdown the build up of soap residue on clothing after a wash. This is what will keep your fabric softer for longer!

What You Need to Make Homemade Fabric Softener

Making homemade fabric softener is simple. All you will need is:

  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Essential Oil

In a quart sized mason jar measure the vinegar and pour it into the jar. Add in your favourite blend of essential oils.

Seal the lid tightly and give your jar a good shake to help combine the ingredients.

Store on a shelf near your washing machine and use 1/4 cup with every load.

This fabric softener will keep for years but you will likely use it all long before that!
