Not too long ago, I shared the method I use for giving my wooden kitchen tools a deep clean but since then I have really learned the importance of making sure the wood is well conditioned. I recently bought a new set of wooden utensils and I want them to last for a very long time.

I have heard this called many things; Wood Butter, Spoon Butter, Wood Conditioner… Whatever you want to call it, making it is about as easy as anything could possibly be.

It’s important to use food grade products on the tools you use in your kitchen because they, well, come into contact with food.

What You Will Need to Make Cutting Board Conditioner

  • Beeswax
  • Coconut Oil
  • A Digital Scale
  • A vessel to put your finished product into
  • A large pot
  • A glass bowl
  • Something to stir with
  • Optional: Citrus Essential Oil

How to Make Wooden Cutting Board Conditioner

Start by measuring out each of your ingredients. You will need 300 grams of coconut oil and 100 grams of beeswax. If you do not have a digital scale, don’t worry! The general rule of thumb is 1 part wax to 3 parts oil.

Set your ingredients aside and add a few inches of water to the base of the large pot and place a tightly fitting glass bowl over top and bring the water to a boil.

Pour your ingredients into the glass bowl and begin mixing. I like to sneak in a few drops of a food-safe lemon essential oil to the mixture to get a fresh scent.

When the beeswax is fully melted and the ingredients are fully combined, carefully pour your conditioner into the vessel of your choosing. I like to use little mason jars or these little 6oz tins that I found on Amazon. These make great gifts for the cooking enthusiasts in your life.

This recipe should make about 12 ounces of cutting board conditioner.

Let your conditioner rest for 24 hours before using.

How to Use Cutting Board Conditioner

After giving your cutting boards a deep clean, allow them to dry thoroughly.

Once they have dried fully, using a cloth, scoop out a small amount of the wood conditioner and buff it onto your cutting boards and other wooden kitchen utensils.

How Often Should You Use Cutting Board Conditioner

Cutting board conditioner should be used once to twice per year. If you use wooden tools in your kitchen very frequently, you may need to condition the wood more often.

The best way to tell if your wooden tools need to be conditioned is to sprinkle a few drops of water on the surface. If the water absorbs quickly, that means that you have dry wood and should condition it!
