How to Make A Keepsake Ornament

Do you have a box of old baby clothes that you are unsure of what to do with? In this blog post I will teach you how to make a keepsake ornament from your children’s old baby clothes that you can hold onto and appreciate for years to come!

Christmas keepsake ornament made from old baby's clothing hanging on Christmas tree.

There is a box in my office that I call the graveyard of baby clothes.

It’s a small box but it is filled with clothing that my daughter wore maybe a handful of times before growing out of. I swore I’d hold onto it “just in case” but when “just in case” did not happen, the box stayed put. It can be hard to let go of those keepsakes!

For years, I had a hard time letting go of the items in this box. Once I came to the realization that I never actually looked through this box, letting go of the items became much easier to swallow. But instead of simply giving them away, I decided to repurpose those keepsake clothing items and turn them into handmade ornaments!

In this blog post, I am going to show you how to make your own keepsake ornament by repurposing the old clothing that you may not be ready to let go of, just like I did!

What You Will Need:

For this tutorial I am using a romper that my daughter wore to her first birthday party. The first thing I did was to take it apart at the seams, since it was so small, taking it apart made it much easier to work with.

Let’s Start!

Begin by taking apart your embroidery hoop and placing the largest circle hoop on top of the fabric that you intent to work with.

Trace around the embroidery hoop using a washable or light coloured marker. Using a pair of fabric scissors, cut around the circle.

Open the embroidery hoop and place the fabric inside. Screw the bolt on top to lock in the fabric.

Hot glue on any ribbon, bows or decorative baubles. This romper had a bow on the back, which I cut off and reattached to the front of the ornament.

Using a hot glue gun, attaching gold ribbon to handmade Christmas ornament.

Using a ribbon, create a loop and hot glue it to the back of your ornament.

Allow your ornament to dry completely before hanging on your Christmas tree.

These would make wonderful gifts for grandparents and other family members. You don’t even need to use your old children’s clothing. These can be made from old sweaters, pillowcases with fun patterns. The possibilities are endless!
