Sometimes when you are out thrifting and antiquing the stars align and the clouds open up from the Heavens to shine down on the perfect item that is waiting just for you.

In this case, that item was this amazing 1970’s John Wagner spice rack.

This 24-piece spice rack is small but works beautifully with the thrifted, farmhouse decor and the overall apothecary look that I’m trying to achieve in my kitchen. The only complaint was that the labels were in really poor condition when I initially rescued this spice rack from the Value Village shelves and after a good wash, they were completely gone.

I’ve had this piece in my kitchen for a few months now and I have been mulling over just how to re-label the jars in a way that is just as special as they are.

Initially, I had decided that I would just write the labels on the jars with a chalk marker but I don’t love my handwriting and the gorgeous, rounded shape of these jars made them a bit difficult to work with. So I decided to do the next easiest thing, head onto Canva and attempt to recreate the sweet, decorative labels that originally came with the jars.

How to Create Your Own Spice Jar Labels in Canva

Canva is an amazing resource for those beginning graphic designers. Use the app the create your own designs, edit photos and video, and add text to pictures.

I made these labels by selecting a standard 8.5×11 paper size and used their pre-made borders and fonts to create tiny labels for these jars. It took some time to figure out the proper size for the jars but with Canva’s easy to use resizing tool, it made this task easy to do.

Want to use my labels for yourself? I have made these labels into a free printable for you!

How to Label Your Spice Jars with Antique Labels

To start, print off my free spice jar label printable on brown construction paper. I have created labels of all the most common herbs and spices and left a few blank ones just for you!

Cut out the labels using scissors or a paper cutter.

Use the paintbrush to brush the Mod Podge on the back of the label and carefully center the label onto the spice jars.

Allow the Mod Podge to dry fully for about 10 minutes before brushing the front of the label to seal and protect it from water damage. Then, allow it to dry.

Add your herbs and spices into the spice jars and arrange them onto your favourite spice rack.
