Classic Canadian Butter Tart

Look no further Butter Tart Lovers! This is a easy recipe with simple ingredients for a classic Central Canadian Butter Tart. Butter Tarts may be unknown outside of Canada but I am here to introduce them to the world!

Butter tarts are the most iconic Canadian treat. To the point where yearly festivals are held in their honour.

The most intriguing thing about them is that every area in Canada actually makes them differently. Much debate is still going on about which style of butter tart is the best type of tart.

My favourite? A simple mixture of butter, brown sugar and eggs, topped with chopped walnuts.

What Is a Classic Canadian Butter Tart?

Butter tarts are a small pastry cup filled with a warm caramel-like filling. There are various versions out there. Some with dried fruit inside like apricots or raisins, some with nuts and some without.

The raisin or no-raisin debate is a hot one amongst us Canadians!

The filling is made by mixing together butter, sugar and eggs. Some versions call for maple syrup or even corn syrup.

What You Need to Make Butter Tarts

Butter Tarts are extremely simple! All you will need is:

  • Pie Crust (You can find my recipe for a sourdough pie crust here!)
  • Brown Sugar
  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Salt
  • Chopped Walnuts

How to Make Butter Tarts

To make a classic Canadian Butter Tart, you will need to begin by preheating your oven to 375°F.

Take your homemade sourdough pie crust and roll it out on a lightly floured surface.

Using a large cookie cutter or the mouth of a wide mouth mason jar, begin to cut out 12 dough circles.

Place those circles inside of a well-greased muffin tray.

To make the filling, add your measured butter, brown sugar, egg, salt and vanilla extract.

Using a hand mixer or whisk, beat the ingredients together until well combined.

Spoon the filling into each of the pie crusts about ¾ full.

Sprinkle your walnuts into each tart.

Place the muffin tray into the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes.

Butter Tarts are great hot, warm and even cold so eat them however you’d like! They will store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week.
