I have always had the worst kind of greasy hair. I would wash my hair in the morning and by the end of the day, I would need to wash it again because of how shiny and slick it was. If you spend all day outside working, go to the gym, chase young children around and then spend the remaining hours of the day in a hot kitchen, your hair looks like a mess by the end of the day.

I had learned to accept that multiple hair washes each day was just my lot in life.

And then I learned about oil training your hair.

What is Oil Training?

Your scalp produces oil. It does this to maintain healthy hair and maintain the skin on your scalp. If you are washing your hair frequently, your scalp will produce more and more oil in attempt to combat the shampoo taking away the oil. Frequently washing your hair is counterproductive!

Oil training is the process of training your scalp to produce the proper amount of oil.

You can do this by stretching the days between washing your hair. Start off by skipping one day, and then two and so on until you are only washing your hair once or twice each week.

Why Use Dry Shampoo?

If you are working on oil training your hair, dry shampoo will be your new best friend.

While your scalp is getting used to it’s new no-wash routine it will most likely look really greasy. Using dry shampoo will help to soak up the excess oil and makes your hair look less greasy and dirty.

Dry shampoo will not substitute for washing your hair! But it will make sure no one notices that you haven’t washed your hair.

What You Need to Make Dry Shampoo

  • Cornstarch
  • Baking Soda
  • Essential Oils

Note: Cocao powder is an optional and popular additive for those who have darker hair. My hair is quite dark but I avoid putting cocao powder in mine. Cocao powder has a overpowering scent and it gets everywhere!

How to Make Your Own Dry Shampoo

To make dry shampoo, mix together equal parts cornstarch and baking soda. Then, add in a few drops of your favourite essential oil blends. I like to do a combination of Tea Tree, Mint and Rosemary because it smells like the shampoo bars that I use to wash my hair.

Combine the ingredients thoroughly and then transfer to a container or mason jar to store.

Homemade dry shampoo should last and store for up to 6 months.

How to Apply Homemade Dry Shampoo

Using stiffer bristled make up brush, pick up the dry shampoo and then dab it along your roots, hair part and any parts of your hair that need some refreshing. Use as much as needed.

Allow the dry shampoo powder to sit on your roots for 1 to 2 minutes to absorb as much oil as possible. Next, rub or tussle it into your hair.

This should give your hair a fresh, volumized look!

Homemade Dry Shampoo vs Store Bought

Store bought aerosol dry shampoos have a horrible environmental impact that are damaging to the ozone. The disposable bottles are responsible for more pollution than they are worth.

Cornstarch and Baking Soda, the main ingredients in our dry shampoo, are all compostable materials and are mainly purchased in paper based containers than can be safely disposed off and will naturally break down.

Talc, a main ingredient in most commercial shampoos, can contain asbestos and has been linked to cancer.
