There is nothing quite like entering a room and being immediately met with the smell of fresh flowers. It’s like inviting all of the best parts of Spring into your home.

But buying fresh flowers weekly can get pricey and not everyone has the extra money to spend on frivolous things such as cut flowers. I’m here to tell you that you can easily recreate grand flower arrangements in your own home and you don’t have to pay a dime!

The Principles of Flower Arrangements

Now there are some key things that you need to know if you really want to create a statement arrangement that you fill you with joy each time that you see it!

The most important principle of arranging is balance. Your flower bouquet does not have to be perfectly symmetrical but what happens on one side should balance the other side out. There is nothing worse than walking to the other side of a vase and seeing bare patches in an arrangement.

Other important things to take into consideration are colour, scale, unity and proportion.

Now let’s talk about how to pick your flowers.

Choosing the Main Flowers

Your main flowers should be the largest flowers in your arrangement in terms of size. They are the statement piece that dictates the purpose of every of piece that you add into your boquet.

Something else to take into consideration is the colour of the main flowers. You want every flower in the arrangement to compliment each other. If it helps, pull out a colour wheel and see what other colours will work best with your main flowers.

For my main flowers I chose purple lilacs and a darker purple allium. These were the biggest flowers that I could find growing in my yard and the colour purple became the main colour of our arrangement.

Picking Your Accent Flowers

The job of the accent flower is to draw your eyes to the main flowers in your arrangement. For this reason, you want them to be complimentary in colour as well as size and shape. Choosing something too big would complete with the main flowers for attention and something too small would get lost behind the large blossoms.

I chose these two different colours of wallflowers for my my arrangement. One in yellow and one in white. Yellow and purple are complimentary colours on the colour wheel so they work perfectly together in an arrangement.

How to Choose Greenery

This is my favourite part of arranging flowers. You can get very whimsical with the greenery as long as it does not overshadow the main flowers! The greenery’s purpose is to add structure to the overall look of the boquet.

I love the grandness of large ferns, so I chose to use them in mine. The scale of the leaves work in balance with the scale and shape of the lilacs. I also chose horsetail. The shape of horsetail has a similar shape to the wallflowers.

You can choose just about any green foliage for your floral arrangements! Popular choices are eucalyptus, holly and myrtle. You can even add berries into your boquet!

How to Arrange Your Flowers

Start by choosing the vessel you will be keeping your flowers in. The stems should be cut in proportion to the vase. You will want to majority of the stems to stay hidden inside the vase and to easily be hidden by the larger flowers.

Fill your vase with water. If available to you, you can add some cut flower food to the water to help your flowers and greenery last longer!

Start by adding in your main flowers and then your accent flowers and end by filling in the greenery. Rotate your vase while adding in each piece to fill in any gaps or places where large amounts of stem are showing.

By the end of this tutorial you will be creating your own beautiful flower arrangements to fill every room!
