Homemade Celery Salt

Celery salt is an excellent and simple way to use up all of your leftover celery. Perfect for your no-waste kitchen!

In the middle of the first snow storm of the season, I made a mad dash out to my garden to harvest the remaining stalks of celery that I had left growing. I’d like to claim to be an organized gardener, but I’m not and there were still many bushels of celery left in the garden.

But how to preserve all the celery?

To be honest, there aren’t many incredible ways to preserve celery that maintain the delicious fresh, crunch. There are a few ways though that make celery still edible at least. One of my favourite ways to preserve celery is to chop the stalks into smaller pieces and then dehydrate it. This is the easiest way to then be able to scoop and add celery to any soup, broth or stew you are making.

Another way that I like to preserve celery is to make homemade celery salt. Celery salt is a great way to use up all the scraps and leaves that are left behind on the stalks!

What is celery salt?

Celery salt is exactly what it sounds like. It is a combination of dehydrated celery or celery seeds and salt. It is easily made and makes a tasty addition to many dishes. I prefer to use mine with dehydrated celery over celery seeds… I like to use my seeds in the garden and not in my kitchen!

What You Need to Make Celery Salt

  • Celery Leaves
  • Kosher Salt

You will also need somewhere to dry the leaves. This could be a dehydrator or simply a rack to hang the leaves until they are dry.

How to Make Celery Seasoned Salt

Remove and wash the celery leaves.

If using a dehydrator, place them across the dehydrator trays and turn your dehydrator onto the lowest setting and dry until the leaves crumble easily. On my dehydrator, this took roughly 4 to 5 hours.

Alternatively, you can hang the leaves to dry using a herb drying rack or just stringing on a coat rack until they are dry.

Place the leaves into a food processor and and blend until they are a fine powder.

Now, combine the salt with the celery powder to make your celery salt. The standard ratio for celery salt is 2:1, 2 parts salt to 1 part celery.

Transfer the celery into an air tight container and use as needed. This salt should last up to 6 months on your pantry shelves.

How to Use Celery Salt

You can use celery salt for many things in your kitchen. It makes a great seasoning for salads, especially egg salad, and pairs well with a varitey of meats.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup celery leaves
  • 1/2 cup salt

Instructions

  1. Remove leaves from celery stalks and wash them thoroughly.
  2. Place the leaves onto the dehydrator trays and start the dehydrator on it's lowest setting.
  3. Dehydrate until leaves are crispy and crumble easily. This should take roughly 5 hours.
  4. Remove the leaves from the dehydrator and transfer them into the food processor.
  5. Blend until the celery leaves have reached a mostly fine powder.
  6. Add in the salt and blend until the celery and salt are fully combined.
  7. Store the celery salt in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Store celery salt in an airtight container for up to 6 months.
  • You can use celery salt in a variety of dishes, such as egg salad, potato salad or even added to a meat blend.
