Sourdough Discard Waffles

These yummy sourdough waffles are ready in no time at all and make the perfect easy but amazing breakfast!

We have had a waffle maker for years but it has only been used a handful of times. The amount of times this little appliance has just barely made it out and was save from the donation bun is too many to count! Every time I looked at it, I told myself “One day you’re going to want waffles and if you donate the waffle maker, you won’t be able to have waffles.”

The day for waffles finally came around and now I have been making them just about every other day for weeks! Why? Because waffles are so quick and easy to just whip together!

Pancakes have officially been dethroned as my favourite family breakfast option.

What You Will Need to Make Sourdough Waffles

For starters, you will need a waffle iron. Don’t worry if you don’t have one though! Between you and me, this is the exact same recipe that I use for pancakes.

You will also need:

  • Flour
  • Sourdough Starter
  • Honey
  • Baking Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • An egg
  • Milk
  • Oil for greasing the waffle iron

How to Make Sourdough Waffles

Begin by measuring all of your ingredients and adding them into a large bowl. Start with your dry ingredients and then add the wet ingredients in last.

Whisk together until there are no more visible clumps.

This step is optional, but if I have the time, I like to let the waffle batter rest for 15 minutes or so to let the flavour of the sourdough develop a bit more. If you’d really like to gain all of the benefits of the fermentation process, the batter can be prepared the night before and placed in the fridge overnight to use the next morning.

Begin heating the waffle iron. Be sure to follow the instructions given with your waffle maker as every machine is different.

When the machine is fully heated, scoop about 1/2 cup of the batter onto the waffle iron and close the machine. Each waffle will take about 5 minutes to fully cook and brown to your preference.

Serve with your favourite toppings like jam, syrup and peanut butter!
