Wait! Don’t throw out that bread that is a little past it’s prime! I have a perfect way to save it and keep the deliciousness going. Croutons!

Does your family ever go in ebbs and flows of eating? A few weeks ago, my family was eating bread constantly. I couldn’t keep enough around. But then, it just stopped and suddenly I was left with a whole bunch of sourdough bread that was in danger of going stale.

Croutons are a fantastic way to use up any leftover bread that may be lingering around.

What You Need to Make Sourdough Croutons

  • Day or two old Sourdough Bread
  • Olive Oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Garlic Powder
  • Oregano
  • Parsley

How to Make Sourdough Croutons

To start, you will need some sourdough bread. I have plenty of amazing recipes for different styles of bread. I used my classic sandwich bread recipe for these croutons but I have a sneaking suspicion that this recipe would taste amazing with almost every kind of bread.

Preheat your oven to 350°F.

Slice your bread into roughly ¾” to 1″ thick cubes and place them into a large mixing bowl.

Drizzle olive oil into the bowl. Use your hands or a wooden spoon to gently toss the bread so that each piece has a sufficient amount of oil and then transfer the bread onto a rimmed baking sheet.

Sprinkle salt, pepper, grated parmesan cheese, oregano, garlic powder and parsley across the tops of the bread. You can also add additional herbs and adjust the salt and pepper to your liking.

Place the baking sheet into the oven and bake for 35 minutes or until the bread is crispy.

At about the halfway mark, remove the baking sheet from the oven turn the croutons so that each side may become nicely toasted.

How to Use and Store Sourdough Croutons

Croutons add a nice crunch to salads, soups and other dishes. Croutons even make a tasty snack all on their own! Just open the container and eat.

You can store homemade croutons in an air tight container at room temperature for up to a week. You can also freeze them before baking to save for a later date.
