It’s incredible how such small critters can do so much damage to your garden. Between the chipmunks digging up my corn and eating the majority of my peas and all the cabbage worms completely desecrating my brassicas, I can’t seem to catch a break!
I take what I use in my soil and on my plants very seriously. Why? Because eventually, whatever I add to my soil or spray on the leaves of my plants is going to end up inside my family’s bodies. Commercial pesticides and fertilizers are always a concern when they contain many different toxins and chemicals.
Thankfully, there are many safe and non-toxic alternatives for pesticides to protect your plants and the health of your family!
Natural ways to repel bugs in the garden
One way I like to keep unwanted bugs out of my garden is by growing plants that naturally repel bugs! Basil, lavender, citronella, marigolds and mint are all plants that are easy to grow that will deter bugs from bothering you and your plants. Sew them in pots around the perimeter of your garden to create a protective barrier.
Vinegar is also another easy to use pest repellent. I don’t recommend spraying vinegar directly onto your plants but spraying vinegar around the outside of your garden beds and in the pathways through your garden will ward off bugs like ants, flies and mosquitoes.
If you’re looking for something to spray directly onto your plants, look no further than my easy to make, all-natural bug repellent!

How to make your own bug repellent for the garden
To make the bug repellent, add your peppermint essential oil, castille soap and water into a spray bottle. Screw the cap on the bottle, and then give the bottle a good shake.
Remember to give the bottle a shake each time you are going to spray your plants as the essential oil can separate from the other ingredients.
How to use your homemade pesticide
To use your new homemade bug repellent, shake gently and then spray on your plants leaves as needed. Use the spray up to a few times a week to deter and repel old and new insects.
